Isabel Mitchell – Contemporary Glass Sculpture

I have been working in glass for 12years having started my career as a microbiologist and spending over 20 years in science before finally realising my dream, and returning to my love of art and sculpture. I fell in love with glass from my first introduction, the play of colours in different lighting conditions transforms the glass more than in any other material.

My inspiration is mostly from my love of classical sculpture and also abstract expressionism. My work focusses on the human form; the strong lines of the male and contours of the female forms which readily lend themselves to glass sculpture.

I have a great need to experiment and push the boundary on what is possible with kiln formed glass using the clay to sculpt the forms and lost wax technique to create the cast glass sculpture.
